Windows Backup dengan Metode RSYNC dan FreeNAS

Backup adalah sesuatu yg kadang lebih sering dibuat lupa oleh user dengan alasan klasik yaitu “tidak sempat” atau malah “malas ah”. Sayangnya, anda mau tidak mau harus melakukannya, terutama bila anda bekerja dgn data yg selalu berubah atau bahkan memanage sebuah PC khusus tersendiri utk menangani hal tsb. Namun ada satu cara yg sedikit mudah dilakukan oleh kebanyakan orang. 

disini kita akan memakai sebuah Network Attach Storage Operating System (NAS) yg dikenal sebagai FreeNAS sebagai basic cerita kali ini,lho ? kok ampe ke NAS segala sih? dlm logika awam bin kepengin apa2 mudah bin cepet bin instan layaknya ngitung 1,2,3 maka pilihan jatuh pd FreeNAS dgn pertimbangan sbb: 

  1. Menggunakan resource hardware yg minim,engga prelu make server heboh bin canggih,jd solusi hemat bukan?. 
  2. Karena diinstal sbg OS pd sebuah PC,maka FreeNAS bisa dikatakan adl “maintenanless” sekali pasang,instol beres sudah. 
  3. Opensource, yang konon kata banyak org akan mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa!. 
  4. Virus free, karena dibuat berdasarkan kernel BSD maka akan ada jaminan penuh 100% bahwa file tidak akan terinfeksi virus atau virus tak akan nyebar dalam data disk/folder yg ada di freeNAS. 

Sudah cukup lengkap alasan saya buat milih FreeNAS maka langsung bisa kita mulai action ya,cuman dikarenakan cerita ini bertujuan utk membuat user aktif (dlm artian buat gugling dulu sebelum nanya or mbaca2 dulu sebelum mikir) maka saya engga crita dulu bagaimana menginstal FreeNAS,mungkin lain kali klo penyakit “males” sudah agak hilang thread ini bisa jadi pemicu bahan diskusi yg bagus.
Metode ini menggunakan Rsync yang mana secara ngawur saya terjemahkan menjadi “re-syncronize copy” yg dlm artian ngawurnya adl ” Rsync tidak akan mengcopy ulang sebuah data yg sama pada folder backup dan source backup” sehingga perform action ini akan cukup menyingkat waktu dan space disk/folder yg dipakai sbg backup. 

 

Dalam prakteknya, si mahluk Rsync ini kudu terinstall dan berjalan sbg “service windows”,lha kok? lha iya lah,klo kita menjalankan sbg service maka kita akan cukup melakukan sekali seting dan instalasi dan selanjutnya biarkanlah Rsync + FreeNAS menjadi 2 sejoli yg meringankan tugas kita :) 

Install Rsync di windows 

dlm sedikit pengalaman saya yg cuman seiprit ini,nginstall rsync yg termudah (krn saya cukup malas) adl dgn mempergunakan sebuah tools yg (lagi2) freeware yaitu DeltaCopy yg mana dlm opsinya si DeltaCopy ini bisa berjalan ‘as a service” di windows.hebat kan yah..? sudah freeware bisa kerja sendiri tanpa disuruh2 lagi !.dan apabila anda sedikit merasa sebagai generasi bangsa yg suka tantangan dan dinamis, maka anda bisa mendownload manual install version

ok,sampai dimana tadi? oh ya lupa….skarang anggep aja semua dah tau lah ya,biar cepet gitu :D dan kita langsung nginstall si rsync di PC yg akan kita pakai sbg sumber backup.setelah kita download maka kita langsung eksekusi aja file setup.exe dr rsync tadi 

 

kemudian sdh pasti kita klik “continue” 

 

kemudian anda bisa pilih mau ditaruh dimana folder instalasi rsync,dan selanjutnya klik aja install apabila sdh mrasa yuakiiiin dgn pilihan yg anda buat. 

 

setelah selesai proses maka anda akan dihadapkan pada pilihan utk launch program 

 

sudah kan? ok,lanjut yak :D 

Configure Rsync service 

secara default,rsync akan bersifat sebagai “windows service” yg mana bisa dikatakan akan terload secara otomatis dan bekerja di background,untuk menceknya anda bisa melakukan melalui tombol start dan akan terlihat tampilan menu 

 

dan kemudian anda harus melakukan opsi register windows service pada tombol pilihan  

kemudian,sesaat setelah tombol dipencet,maka anda akan dihadapkan pada pilihan username pada account yg anda jalankan di PC anda,sebaiknya,pada pemakaian ini anda sudah atau sebagai ‘administrator’ di PC anda sendiri. 

 

hebatnya si rsync ini adl,dia bisa melakukan backup di domain group! sesuatu yg jarang terjadi sebuah program freeware (mari tepuk tangan !!!) 

pada point ini,sering terjadi kesalahan atau ketidaknyamanan saat kita mengisi permintaan username dan password,walo kita telah login sbg administrator,entah kenapa,mungkin krn freeware kali yah? tp tak apalah,kenyataannya hal2 tsb tidaklah mengganggu dan kita bisa abaikan saja. 

apabila ada terjadi hal tsb,kita langsung aja deh menuju TKP eh..maksud saya ga usah diisi apapun alias biarkan kosong aja isian username/password tsb dan kita langsung ke pilihan My Computer -> Manage -> Services and Applications -> Servicessehingga muncul tampilan spt ini 

 

kemudian double click pada DeltaCopy service 

 

kemudian klik pada “log on” tab 

 

kemudiann ubah nilai dr this account ke system account kemudian anda bisa merestart service rsync dan kemudian akan terlihat tampilan seperti ini 

 

ok service rsync pada PC target yg akan di backup sdh beres. 

Seting Virtual Directory backup 

ok,sekarang kita akan seting dan konfig target PC yg akan di backup (yg juga terinstal appz rsync di dalamnya) target backup bisa berarti folder atau drive bahkan drive yg terisi system yg aktif sekalipun (terdapat OS yg berjalan) akan tetapi saya tidak akan merekomendasikan ini,alasanya apa donk! pokoknya engga deh,soale blajar2 dr pengalaman backup drive yg berisi system aktif lbh banyak gagal drpd berhasilnya,saya sendiri ga tau kenapa,mungkin salah satu sebab kegagalan adl brainware orang yg sedang mengetik tulisan ini !! :D 

nah,sekarang kita umpamain aja folder yg mau kita backup adl folder Download yg ada di desktop,maka yg akan kita lakukan adl di DeltaCopy Server kita klik pilihan virtual directories kemudian di existingDirectories klik pada jendela kolom New Virtual Directory 

 

ketik sembarang nama tanpa spasi pada penamaan folder tersebut dan satu hal yg harus diingat bahwa nama folder tersebut harus sama di FreeNAS pada bagian mount point folder share name dimana data2 anda akan di backup klo hal ini tidak dilakukan ya sia2 saja semuanya.jd perhatikan baik2…. 

 

nah sekarang anda bisa melihat sebuah virtual direktori baru di DeltaCopy Server Console,kemudian highlight di new virtual direktori tsb arahkan ke directory option dibawah path kemudian ketik nama folder yg akan anda backup.atau…anda bisa memilih langsung folder tujuan dgn memakai opsi browse.apabila diinginkan,anda bisa menuliskan sedikit komentar pada opsi ini,ini sedikit menolong utk mengingat sekiranya hal2 apa yg tersimpan pada folder yg akan kita backup tersebut. 

satu hal terpenting,uncheck pada opsi Read only ini berguna agar spy si FreeNAS tidak mendelete file pada sumber asal backup. 

 

setelah selesai anda bisa klik Close pada deltaCopy Server Console dan di tahapan ini anda sudah selesai mengkonfigure sumber asal backup yaitu PC anda sendiri,di cerita selanjutnya adl opsi2 seting yg harus dilakukan di FreeNAS. 

Konfig pada FreeNAS server 

agak2 sulit membayangkan akhir drpd cerita ini :) krn disini kita langsung berhadap2an dgn opsi yg belum bisa diketahui secara secara lebih nyata terkait dgn backup rsync ini,krn kita belum bersama2 dlm tulisan ini lebih jauh mengupas ttg freeNAS, mungkin dilain kesempatan akan bisa kita bahas bersama.janji deh …. :D 

ok deh,anggep aja FreeNAS sdh jalan di sebuah PC tersendiri,ga usah gede2 itu PC,cukup pentium I saja dan ga usah repot dgn system disk buat FreeNAS,krn dia bisa diinstal di floppy disk,USB disk,Compact Flash,DOM,bahkan dijalankan sbg Live CD … hebat yak :D yg terpenting adl,anda punya kapasitas disk yg cukup utk menyimpan semua data yg akan anda backup,sepengalaman saya,FreeNAS yg terinstal pada PC pentium II 233 dgn RAM 128mb dan terpadang add-on PCI to IDe dan PCI to SATA disk,mampu menggusung 10 buah disk @ 320Gb saya belum coba utk hdd dgn kapasitas yg lebih besar,krn saat tsb hanya itulah kapasitas terbesar utk sebuah disk yg bisa saya peroleh. so…anda bisa bayangkan penghematan yg anda lakukan baik dr sisi hardware,tenaga, maupun biaya. 

lanjut ya? …. 

kita langsung menuju sasaran target kita yaitu FreeNAS yg sdh terkonek ke dalam jaringan PC kita, baik dlm lingkup LAN ataupun hanya PC to PC (pairing).utk mengaksesnya kita bisa mengetik IP address pada browser yg telah kita berikan pada FreeNAS saat instalasi setup,dan langsung akan muncul webgui kemudian kita masuk ke pilihan RSYNCD dibawah tab services menu 

 

disini akan menampilkan opsi yg ada pada FreeNAS 

 

hal pertama yg dilakukan adl mengklik service client sebab rsync server adl PC yg menjadi sumber asal yg akan kita backup. 

 

kemudian pilih [checked] dan klik enable  

kemudian sesaat sesudah itu akan muncul tampilan spt ini 

 

begitu anda melihat tampilan tersebut maka sebaiknya anda harus benar2 perhatikan 3 opsi dibawah ini,krn ini adl kunci dan harga mati cerita ini kalo anda ingin bener2 berhasil membuat backup data sekaligus freeNAS server storage. 

1.Remote RSYNC Server – ini adl DNS name atau IP address PC yg akan kita backup,apabila anda akan menggunakan opsi IP address sbg point pilihan,maka usahakan anda memakai IP address statik dlm lingkungan LAN anda,atau bila DHCP usahakan memakai type DHCP yg enable reservation address,sehingga selalu mendapatkan IP yg sama setiap kali refresh.dan apabila anda memilih memakai DNS name sebgai point pilihan,maka usahakan DNS name tersebut ada pada seting DNS option pada FreeNAS dan pada PC target backup. 

2.Shares to be synchronized – menunjukkan letak folder share yg akan kita backup,disini penamaan folder HARUS SAMA antara FreeNAS dan PC target backup,folder tsb adl folder yg telah anda create dgn DeltaCopy Server pd cerita sebelumnya,disini anda bisa melakukan sebanyak mungkin (multiple) shared folder di FreeNAS dan PC target selama nama folder adl sama,baik di FreeNAS maupun di PC target,bahkan dgn membuat bbrp PC target yg berbeda pun bisa dilakukan,asal kata kunci keselamatan adl satu hal ” samakan nama folder di PC target backup dgn nama folder shared backup pada FreeNAS” itu aja kok…gampang kan? 

3.Synchronization Schedule – opsi ini adl penjadwalan backup yg akan dilakukan,disini semuanya bisa dilakukan sesuka hati bersama pacar …eh jadwal :D ,anda bisa melakukan penjadwalan seperti yg tertera pada tabel list tsb.amat sangat membantu bagi org yg suka lupa seperti saya loh…bener itu :D 

ok…apabila semua pilihan2 dan isian spt ke 3 point diatas sudah dilakukan maka anda tinggal klik ‘save’ pada FreeNAS dan setelah bbrp saat backup proses terjadi anda bisa melihat bahwa,isi folder backup pada FreeNAS dan PC target backup akan sama percis kek pinang dibelah kampak ! 

 

 

nah .. selesailah sudah ceritanya :) oh ya,sedikit kesimpulan disini,bahwa dgn membuat opsi tersebut (FreeNAS server dan backup schedule) maka kita akan benar2 tertolong,sebab di dunia internet yg sudah penuh dgn cem-macem virii dan kerusakan2 hardware maupun system yg tak bisa kita duga sebelumnya.dan satu point lagi,bagi orang2 pelupa jg benar2 akan diuntungkan dgn opsi tersebut,krn sekali anda menseting maka anda bisa melupakan kapan waktu backup seharusnya dilakukan,spt pepatah bilang “just clik setup and forget”

Installing Dropbox as a service on Windows Server 2003, 2008 (x64)

I wanted to install a backup solution, and made a go for using the Dropbox service.

What you need: Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. Assuming installation was done in default directory.

1. Install Dropbox (I used version 1.0.10)
2. Choose preferences and uncheck “Show desktop notifications” and “Start Dropbox on system startup”
3. Exit Dropbox by clicking exit in the context menu that shows when right clicking icon in task bar
4. Execute at command line prompt:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>instsrv Dropbox "c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\srvany.exe"

If everything went ok, the following will be displayed:

The service was successfuly added!

Make sure that you go into the Control Panel and use
the Services applet to change the Account Name and
Password that this newly installed service will use
for its Security Context.

Next is to change the user for witch the newly added service “Dropbox” runs under. Change this to Administrator.
5. Choose properties on Dropbox service.
6. Click on tab “Log On”
7. Click “This account”, and select Admimistrator. Set appropriate password.
8. Click Apply and OK

If this is the first time you have done this procedure for the administrator user, you will get an notification saying that the “Administrator user has been granted log on as service rights”

Next is to setup some registry settings for the service
9. Start > Run > regedit
10. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dropbox
11. Create a new key “Parameters”
12. Add a new string value “Application”, (type REG_SZ). Set the value to the path to the dropbox.exe binary. Find the location by right clicking on the Dropbox icon on the desktop. Simply copy the path from there.
13. Close Registry Editor
14. Go back to Services, and start the Dropbox service

Now everything should be in place and work correctly.

Addition: It works fine to stop the Dropbox service, then start Dropbox and make changes in preferences etc, save changes and exit Dropbox. Then you can start Dropbox service again without problems. Work very neat actually. Running now on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 64-bit. On Windows Server 2008 you can just copy instsrv.exe and srvany.exe to a folder under Program Files and create the Dropbox service from there.

Jalankan patch, lalu klik patch.

Oiya, sebelum tahap patching, sebaiknya sobat blogger aktifkan Cisco Network Magic Pro Edition ke TRIAL dulu yah, baru deh di patch dengan cara di atas. Ok

Robocopy

Robocopy, or “Robust File Copy”, is a command-line directory replication command. It has been available as part of the Windows Resource Kit starting with Windows NT 4.0, and was introduced as a standard feature of Windows VistaWindows 7 and Windows Server 2008. The command is literally robocopy.

Features

Robocopy is notable for capabilities above and beyond the built-in Windows copy and xcopy commands, including the following:

  • Ability to tolerate network interruptions and resume copying. (incomplete files are marked with a date stamp of 1980-01-01 and contain a recovery record so Robocopy knows where to continue from)
  • Ability to copy file data and attributes correctly, and to preserve original timestamps, as well as NTFS ACLs, owner information, and audit information using command line switches. (/COPYALL or /COPY:) Copying folder timestamps is also possible in later versions (/DCOPY:T).
  • Ability to assert the Windows NT “backup right” (/B) so an administrator may copy an entire directory, including files denied readability to the administrator.
  • Persistence by default, with a programmable number of automatic retries if a file cannot be opened.
  • A “mirror” mode, which keeps trees in sync by optionally deleting files out of the destination that are no longer present in the source.
  • Ability to skip files that already appear in the destination folder with identical size and timestamp.
  • A continuously-updated command-line progress indicator.
  • Ability to copy file and folder names exceeding 256 characters — up to a theoretical limit of 32,000 characters — without errors.[1]
  • Multithreaded copying. (Windows 7 only) [2]
  • Return code[3] on program termination for batch file usage.

Notably, Robocopy will fail to copy open files. The so-called Backup mode is sometimes mistaken as an ability to copy open files, which it is not. Backup mode is an administrative privilege that allows Robocopy to override permissions settings (specifically, NTFS ACLs) for the purpose of making backups. The Windows Volume Shadow Copy service is the only Windows subsystem that can copy open files, which it does by snapshotting them for point-in-time consistency. Robocopy does not implement accessing the Volume Shadow Copy service in any way, inhibiting its usefulness as a backup utility for volumes that may be in use. However, one can use separate utilities such as VSHADOW or DISKSHADOW (included withWindows Server 2008) to create a shadow copy of a given volume which Robocopy can back up.

On the other hand, by design, the original Robocopy version is not able to replicate security attributes of files which have had their security permissions changed after an initial mirroring.[4] This behavior was changed on Robocopy versions included in Windows 2008 and Windows Vista. The downside of this is that Robocopy does not behave consistently between platforms.[5]

[edit]Common usage scenarios

Copy directory contents of ​A​ to ​B​ (including file data, attributes and timestamps), recursively with empty directories (/E):

 Robocopy C:\A C:\B /E

Copy directory recursively (/E), and copy all file information (/COPYALL, equivalent to /COPY:DATSOU, D=Data, A=Attributes, T=Timestamps, S=Security=NTFS ACLs, O=Owner info, U=aUditing info), do not retry locked files (/R:0)(the number of retries on failed copies default value is 1 million), preserve original directories’ Timestamps (/DCOPY:T – requires version XP026 or later):

 Robocopy C:\A C:\B /COPYALL /E /R:0 /DCOPY:T

Mirror A to B, destroying any files in B that are not present in A (/MIR), copy files in restartable mode (/Z) in case network connection is lost:

 Robocopy C:\A \\backupserver\B /MIR /Z

It should be noted that using the /Z switch results in marked slowdown of copy operations.

[edit]Folder copier, not file copier

Robocopy syntax is markedly different from standard copy commands, as it accepts only folder names as its source and destination arguments. File names and wild-card characters (such as “*.*“) are not valid source or destination arguments. Files may be selected or excluded using the optional filespec filtering argument. Filespecs can only refer to the filenames relative to the folders already selected for copying. Fully qualified path names are not supported.

For example, in order to copy the file foo.txt from directory c:\bar to c:\baz, one could use the following syntax:

 Robocopy c:\bar c:\baz foo.txt

[edit]Bandwidth throttling

Robocopy’s “inter-packet gap” (IPG) option allows some control over the network bandwidth utilized in a session. In theory, the following formula expresses the delay (D, in milliseconds) required to simulate a desired bandwidth (BD, in kilobits per second), over a network link with an available bandwidth of BA kbps:

D = {B_A - B_D \over B_A \times B_D} \times 512 \times 1000

In practice however, some experimentation is usually required to find a suitable delay, due to factors such as the nature and volume of other traffic on the network. The methodology employed by the IPG option may not offer the same level of control provided by some other bandwidth throttling technologies, such as BITS (which is utilized by Windows Update and BranchCache).

Email notification of Robocopy jobs success or failure can be established using a utility called RoboCopyPlus (see link below). An extension to Robocopy it enables it to send email notifications based on ‘Success’, ‘Warning’ or ‘Error’ result of the Robocopy job. It can condense logfiles to show warnings and error only, and optionally attaches these to the email message based on level of success, warning or error. The product works with any version of Robocopy, as it acts as a ‘wrapper’ around it. Existing configurations using Robocopy, often called from scheduled batch files, do not need to be altered, other then by replacing ‘Robocopy’ with ‘RoboCopyPlus’ and adding the parameters to configure email notification and/or report condensing.

[edit]Windows event logging

RoboCopyPlus (see link below) enables Robocopy to write log entries in the Windows event log (application log). It forwards the exit codes of the Robocopy job to the log and the log-type (‘informational’, ‘warning’, ‘Error’) represents the Robocopy job result. This feature enables Robocopy to be used in environments where network management based on event log scanning is used, as is common for many larger organisations and ICT solution providers.

Although Robocopy itself is a command-line tool, Microsoft Technet has provided a GUI front-end. The GUI requires the installation of the .NET Framework 2.0 (40 MB), if it is not already installed. It was developed by Derk Benisch, a systems engineer with the MSN Search group at Microsoft.[6] The Microsoft Robocopy GUI also includes version XP026 of Robocopy (Vista version). When downloaded from the TechNet link below, the version reported is “Microsoft Robocopy GUI 3.1.2.”

There are other non-Microsoft GUIs for Robocopy. The most popular among them appears to be a program by SH-Soft, confusingly also called “Robocopy GUI” [7]. Another one is called “WinRoboCopy”. [8]

A copying program with a GUI, RichCopy, is also available on Microsoft’s Technet. While it is not based on Robocopy, it offers similar features, and it does not require the installation of the .NET 2.0 framework. [9]

Robocopy for Mirroring Directory(ies) to a Backup Disk

I did quite a bit of looking around for a way to backup my documents and music and other files on my new Vista PC. I have a second disk in my system and wanted to mirror my important data to that second disk. There’s a backup utility built in to Vista, but it doesn’t have a way to exclude directories (!) and I have some directories with large, static data that I already have backed up elsewhere and don’t want to include on the backup disk.

I found a bunch of mirroring tools, and none seemed very good. I don’t need it to run unattended, because I remember to do it often enough and also I don’t leave my PC on overnight usually.

I settled on Robocopy.exe, a command-line tool that isn’t in Vista by default but I was able to get it by installing the Windows 2003 Resource Kit. Robocopy is working great for me. It took some effort to figure out the command-line switches, but now I have a batch file that I can run once in awhile to mirror my important data to my backup disk. It’s been reliable, synchronizes directories by deleting files in the destination that have been deleted in the source, and is very fast by not copying files that are already sync’d.

Here’s the command I’m using to mirror my user folder on the backup disk:
robocopy “c:\Users\Ryan” “e:\Sync Folder\Ryan” /MIR /XJ /R:1 /ZB /S /W:1 /XD “AppData” /XF “ntuser.*”

  • /MIR means make the output directory just like the source directory, including deleting files
  • /XJ means exclude junction points
  • /R:1 means only retry failed copies once, I look at the output for errors anyway, and don’t expect any on internal disk to internal disk copy
  • /ZB use restartable mode
  • /S copy subdirectories too, but not empty ones
  • /W:1 wait only 1 second between retries, I did this for the same reasons as /R:1
  • /XD “AppData” Exclude the AppData subdirectory which has a bunch of temporary files I don’t need backed up
  • /XF “ntuser.*” Exclude ntuser.* log files, don’t need them backed up and they’re usually in use
